There’s something deeply grounding about sourdough. In a world that moves too fast, sourdough reminds me to slow down, to tend, to wait, and to trust the process—much like motherhood, faith, and living close to the earth.

As a mom of six, I’m always thinking about how to nourish my family in the most natural way I can. Sourdough has been a gift in our home. Because it’s fermented, it’s gentler on digestion than conventional bread, and the long fermentation helps unlock nutrients in the grain. It’s simple—flour, water, salt, and time—just the way God designed food to be.

Making sourdough feels like stewardship. I mix it with my hands, let it rest, and watch it come alive. It teaches patience and care, lessons I try to pass on to my children as we work the land together, grow our herbs, and prepare healing remedies from what the Lord has given us. Bread baked slowly, with intention, feeds more than the body—it feeds the soul.

Just like the herbs I grow and turn into healing products, sourdough connects us back to creation. It’s humble, nourishing, and rooted in tradition. When I pull a golden loaf from the oven, I’m reminded that simple things, done with love, can be deeply sustaining.

Feeding your sourdough starter (if you received from me, or someone else)

Keep sourdough starter on counter if you plan to feed daily. If you are busy, you can keep starter in fridge and feed weekly. Feeding instructions: Add 1/2 cup flour and 1/4 cup warm water, mix well, and cover.

Basic Sourdough Recipe (Simple & Nourishing)

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup active sourdough starter
  • 1 1/4 cups warm water
  • 3 1/2 to 4 cups flour (I use organic, when possible)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, mix the starter and water until combined.
  2. Add flour and salt, mixing until a shaggy dough forms.
  3. Cover and let rest for 30 minutes.
  4. Gently stretch and fold the dough a few times, then cover and let rise 8–12 hours (overnight works beautifully).
  5. Shape the dough and let it rest while the oven preheats to 450°F with a Dutch oven inside.
  6. Bake covered for 20 minutes, then uncovered for another 20–25 minutes until golden.
  7. Let cool before slicing (if you can wait).

May your home be filled with the smell of warm bread, the peace of slow living, and gratitude for the abundance around us. 🤍
