Making Elderberry Syrup

Why I Make It for My Family (and How You Can Too)

As a Christian mom of six, I’m always looking for simple, natural ways to care for the bodies God has entrusted to me. Between homeschooling, church, work, and everyday life, sickness can slow our whole household down quickly. Over the years, one of my favorite wellness staples has become homemade elderberry syrup.

This isn’t a miracle cure, but it’s a gentle, time-tested remedy that fits beautifully with my desire to be a good steward of our health and our budget. Plus, it’s something I can make right in my own kitchen.

Why I Love Elderberry Syrup

1. Supporting Our Immune Systems Naturally
Elderberries are full of antioxidants and nutrients that help support the immune system. When cold and flu season comes around, I like knowing I have something on hand that helps our bodies do what God designed them to do.

2. Helpful During Cold and Flu Season
In our house, we start taking elderberry syrup at the first sign of sniffles. It doesn’t replace rest, prayer, or good nutrition, but it often helps shorten how long we’re down for the count.

3. Simple Ingredients I Can Trust
One of my favorite parts of making elderberry syrup at home is knowing exactly what’s in it. No artificial dyes, no strange preservatives—just wholesome ingredients I feel good about giving my children.

4. A Small Act of Faithful Mothering
There’s something meaningful about stirring a pot on the stove, praying over my family, and preparing something with my own hands. It reminds me that caring for my family in these small, daily ways is holy work.

Important note: Elderberries must always be cooked before consuming. Raw berries, stems, and leaves are toxic—so please don’t skip this step.

My Go-To Elderberry Syrup Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 cup dried elderberries
  • 3–4 cups water
  • 1 cup raw honey (more or less to taste)
  • 1 cinnamon stick (optional, but lovely)
  • 1 teaspoon fresh grated ginger or ½ teaspoon dried
  • 3–4 whole cloves (optional)

Directions

  1. Simmer the Berries
Add the elderberries, water, cinnamon, ginger, and cloves to a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and let it simmer uncovered for 30–45 minutes, until the liquid reduces by about half.
  2. Mash and Strain
Let it cool slightly, then mash the berries and strain everything through a fine strainer or cheesecloth. Discard the berries.
  3. Sweeten with Honey
Once the liquid is warm (not hot), stir in the honey. Heating honey too much can destroy some of its beneficial properties.
  4. Store
Pour into a glass jar and store in the refrigerator. It keeps well for about 2–3 months.

How We Use It in Our Home

  • Daily support:
Adults take 1 tablespoon a day.
Children take 1 teaspoon a day (over age one).
  • When someone is sick:
We take it 3–4 times a day for a short time.
  • Other uses:
Stirred into tea, mixed with warm water, or even drizzled over yogurt.

A Final Encouragement

God calls us to care for our families with wisdom, diligence, and love. Elderberry syrup is just one small way I try to do that in our home. It’s simple, affordable, and rooted in tradition—and I’m grateful to be able to pass these kinds of practices on to my children.

As always, use discernment and consult a healthcare professional if you have specific medical concerns. And above all, trust the Lord—He is our ultimate healer!
